The alpaca genetic improvement programme carried out at Pacomarca has been yielding tangible results.  Every year more and better specimens are produced which display the characteristics desired in an animal that produces fine fibre, such as the alpaca.

Many of the animals obtained from year to year do not manage to meet the ideal requirements for their selection as studs in the genetic improvement programme at Pacomarca.  However, a good deal of them are healthy animals, well formed and with no visible genetic defects.  These animals are used in the ''Donation of New Reproducers'' programme that seeks to help the families of poorer herdsmen by enabling them to use reproducers with new blood to renovate their herds and thus avoid the problems of inbreeding which frequently give rise to chronic genetic defects.
